Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik heb geblogt. Vele verandenringen, nieuwe job enz…
Vanaf volgende week zal ik proberen om wekelijks een kleine tutorial te posten over Gimp.
Gimp is een vrije software alternatief voor Photoshop.
Dit zal voor mij in ieder geval een leuk onderwerp worden.

Webdesign en Linux

Linux is een vrije (gratis) besturingssysteem , die heel stabiel en flexibel is. Met Linux het je geen last van virussen, spyware en malware. Er bestaan verschillende Linux distributies waarvan Ubutnu zonder twijfel de bekendste is. Een complete lijst van distributies kan je terugvinden op distrowatch. Je kan ook meer informatie terugvinden over linux op de volgende site, linux-info.
HTML editors
Er bestaan een aantal goede HTML editors voor Linux. Mijn favoriet is Bluefish. Het ondersteund (X)HTML,CSS,PHP,Python,… en nog een paar andere talen. Bluefish kan onder Ubuntu gemakkelijk geïnstalleerd worden via de pakketmanager.
Gedit die de standaard teksteditor is in de Gnome omgeving, kan door het installeren van een aantal plugins ook perfect gebruikt worden als HTML editor.
Mensen die liever niet teveel code schrijven kunnen gebruik maken van NVU of nu beter gekend als Kompozer.
Grafische programma’s
Als alternatief op Photoshop heb je Gimp. Het is een heel krachtig programma maar verschilt qua interface vergeleken met Photoshop. Door bijvoorbeeld Crossover Office te installeren kunnen Windows Programma’s zoals Photoshop geïnstalleerd worden. Een ander en goedkoper alternatief is Pixel Image Editor, die heel sterk qua interface op Photoshop trekt.
Webbrowsers
Een website moet uitgebreid getest worden, Firefox, Opera en Chrome zijn onder Linux beschikbaar. Hoe moet het dan met internet explorer? Als je bijvoorbeeld Crossover Office hebt geïnstalleerd dan kan je er rechtstreeks explorer in installeren. Een andere oplossing is IEs4Linux die internet explorer 6 installeert.
Heb je een computer met genoeg geheugen dan kan windows ook in een virtuele machine geïnstalleerd worden.
Windows lettertypen
Onder Linux heb je standaard geen Windows lettertypen, maar die kan je in Ubuntu via synaptic ( pakketbeheer) installeren. het pakket noemt msttcorefonts.
FTP clients
Om je website online te krijgen heb je een FTP client nodig. Onder Linux kan dit met onder andere Gftp of Filezilla.
Het is zeker mogelijk mooie en aantrekkelijke websites te bouwen onder Linux. het vergt enkel een beetje moeite om aan de nieuwe omgeving gewoon te raken. Eenmaal dit gelukt is zal je er zeker geen spijt van hebben.
Kerst en kerstkaartjes

Dit jaar heb ik besloten om geen kaartjes meer via de post op te sturen. Meestal vergeet ik het om ze tijdig in de brievenbus te steken en komen ze natuurlijk telaat toe bij de mensen.
Dit jaar ga ik ze dus via e-mail versturen. Ik weet het is misschien wat onpersoonlijk, maar om daar iets aan te doenh zal ik mijn kaart zelf maken 
Ten eerste een leuke achtergrond op het web zoeken en daarna bewerken (The Gimp ) met tekst enz…
en hier het resultaat:

Making Fractal Backgrounds with The Gimp

I was looking for a new wallpaper last week, but didn’t found what i really wanted.
Then I was thinking I could maybe make one on my own with The Gimp.
I remembered that a time ago there was a post on the VectorLinux Forum on how to make some Fractal Backgrounds…
It is actually quite simple.
STEP 1: Make Image
This is the very simple method to follow:
- Open gimp.
- Set Foreground color to Black (it should be black by default)
- In menu, select File –> New
- In Create a New Image, select the desired resolution.
- Also set Advanced –> Fill Select to “Foreground Color”
- Optional: Click on greyscale bar and set the gradient to something else. This can produce mixed results.
- On the Menu for the image, select Filters –> Render –> Nature –> Flame
STEP 2: Setting up Flame
The images shown used this method; however, not all the images in my collection were done with this method. This method will take longer to process. On my athlon64 3000+ the flame render takes about a minute or two.
Starting in the flame dialog:
- Goto tab Camera and set Zoom to “3″
- Optional: Use “1.5″ for higher speed.
- Click Edit
- In the “Edit Flame” dialog, set Variation to “Spherical”.
- Optional: Sinusoidal also works well at a high zoom.
- Now you must look at the nine boxes. If you like a pattern, choose it. If not, click Randomize. Note, this may be slow.
- When a suitable flame pattern has been chosen click OK.
- In the dialog “Flame” goto the Camera tab and adjust X and Y until you get an image that is fairly centered or otherwise looks good.
- Click OK. Wait a while. This step takes a while!
STEP 3: Color Time
In this step, color is added. I guess you have to decide what color to use. Blue pretty much always works well, and Red rarely works very well as variations in red end up looking purple or yellow. Orange is another good choice. Green is not too hard to get working either.
- In the menu for the image, choose Colors –> Components –> Channel Mixer
- Now, set Output Channel to the color you want to dominate in the image.
- Changing Red, Green, or Blue will make parts of the image that are those color become more or less of the Output Channel Color.
- Adjust the settings here until a desired look is obtained.
- Click OK
- In the GIMP Menu, Choose File –> Save As
Alternate method (this one is a bit easier to get the desired results):
- In the menu for the image, choose Colors –> Colorize
- Either choose one of the preset colors or make your own custom color
- Click OK to apply the settings
- In the GIMP Menu, Choose File –> Save As
